Camellia oil, also known as tea seed oil or tsubaki oil, is extracted from the seeds of the Camellia japonica, Camellia sinensis, or Camellia oleifera plant. This oil is also considered the secret of Japanese skincare. This might be the secret to getting a glass-like skin, even my mom approves of it. She believes that camellia oil is rich in antioxidants and fatty acids which help to hydrate and revitalize your skin. It also helps to keep your skin radiant, protected, and supple. This is why camellia oil is commonly used in many skin care products. Here are the benefits of camellia oil for skin and how to incorporate it into your skincare routine.

What is camellia oil?

Camellia oil is a light oil extracted from the seeds of Camellia japonica and Camellia oleifera plants. It is also known as Tsubaki oil, peanut oil, and tea seed oil. Japanese women have been using it for years to nourish their skin and hair. Camellia oil is made up of fatty acids such as oleic, palmitic, and linoleic acid, as found in a study published in the Journal of Oleo Science.

What are the benefits of camellia oil?

1. Rich in anti-aging properties

Camellia oil provides anti-aging benefits. Researchers discovered that camellia oil stimulates the production of type I skin collagen, (a matrix protein in the skin’s second layer that gives it its firmness), in addition to lowering transepidermal water loss. This prevents the creation of new wrinkles and smoothens fine lines, according to a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

2. Provides deep hydration and nourishment

The vitamins nourish your skin so that it looks and feels silky. Your skin absorbs tea seed oil fast since it resembles the natural oil on your skin. Moreover, it deeply penetrates the epidermis. So, if you are looking for deep moisturisation and hydration for your skin, try using camellia oil. The tea seed oil has a moisturising effect on the skin as it has the occlusive property of the oils that provides the highest skin moisturising effect, as published in the Cosmetics MDPI Journal.

3. Reduces redness and inflammation

“Camellia oil can be used to treat and relieve irritated skin, minimise redness, irritation, and inflammation, and restore the healthiest possible glow to your face. This could reduce the appearance of acne. Additionally, rich in anti-inflammatory and antioxidants shielding your skin from future harm caused by free radicals, says trichologist and cosmetologist, Dr Kiran Sandeep Singh.

4. Reduces dark spots

Camellia oil contains antioxidants, which may help reduce dark spots. The oil helps retain moisture in the skin and nourishes it, which may improve the texture and tone of the skin. A study published in the BMC Complementary Medicine and Therapies Journal demonstrates the effects of camellia flower extract and found that it has anti-inflammatory and other protective properties that not only diminish dark spots and pigmentation but also help to manage skin disorders including atopic dermatitis and acne. It also boosts collagen synthesis, preserving skin suppleness and shielding it from damage brought on by pollutants.

5. Non-comedogenic

“Camellia oil is not comedogenic, meaning it will not clog pores or cause breakouts, despite its thick texture. It is effective on all skin types, including those with oily or acne-prone complexion. Therefore, every skin type can use this camellia oil to get clear and glowing skin,” explains the expert.
